An important document - This is one of the rare anlyses of the free-jazz movement of the 60s & 70s, and it is a heartfelt one. Valerie Wimer tackles the subject from many angles, presenting a global view of the situation facing the musicians at the time. Sometimes Wilmer s enthusiam spills over into bias, her dismissal of Tony Williams is an example, but any criticisms are easily outweighed by the social and historical importance of the book.
