Valerie Wimer tackles the subject from many angles, presenting a global view of the situation facing the musicians at the time. Sometimes Wilmer s enthusiam spills over into bias, her dismissal of Tony Williams is an example, but any criticisms are easily outweighed by the social and historical importance of the book.
